Need we, as abolitionists, say more about the industry-welfarist partnership? Genesis Awards are an important part of the industry-welfarist partnership. Puck wins. Industry wins. Welfarists win. Genesis Awards win. Sentient nonhuman beings lose.

Would the Nobel Peace Prize committee honor, invite, or even mention a serious human rights violator? A genocidist? Genesis Awards are animal exploitation industry public relations awards. They are a scam and a fraud to be ignored along with assurances from all sectors of the meat industry that they “take animal welfare very seriously” and “comply with the highest welfare standards”.

This is, however, what we should expect from welfarists whose focus is on the *treatment* and not the *use* of animals solely as means to our ends. If we are still focused on the treatment rather than the use of animals a hundred years from now, we will still be giving awards to the biggest meat promoters in the world. Promoting meat consumption is the beginning and the end of both traditional and “new” welfarism.*

* For those who are not aware, “new welfarism” in a nutshell is the belief that strong welfarism and single-issue campaigns can ultimately lead to the abolition of animal use. New welfarists claim to want abolition eventually, but maintain the welfarism is a means to get there. Abolitionism, by contrast, rejects the idea that any kind of welfarism, no matter how strong, can ever achieve abolition, but that all resources should be expended on an incremental approach to vegan education and an eventual vegan society.

Thank you Libra for standing up for the beliefs of so many of us and having the guts to do it in a beautiful, classy, yet gutsy way.

You are a true hero for the Animals.

Philip

Thank you Libra for so beautifully speaking your truth and the truth of so many of us who have become frustrated with the lack of integrity within the major animal organizations.
I'm very proud of you.

Chris

Chris
