Greyhound Racing Banned in Massachusetts

I'm thrilled to announce that Question 3 on the Massachusetts ballot was passed and greyhound racing will end at the state's two tracks by January 1, 2010.

Thanks to Christine and everyone else at Grey2KUSA and the Committee to Protect Dogs for their tireless work.

Now, about Florida . . .

I'm glad to hear the Massachusetts dog-racing industry is through, where my beloved Big Bruno came from in 1989 to spend the last 8 years of his 13-year life with me and my wife. A gentle giant who loved human and canine babies, Bruno had a scar on his tongue, broken incisors, and eventually disc problems that might have come from spills that produced the other injuries. His TV and newspaper interviews in Richmond helped keep dog racing out of Virginia, where we were living in the early 1990s. Here's to an end of dog racing and all human domination of canine and other animals.

The ballot initiative that passed was Question 3 in Massachusetts, banning dog racing in the state by 2010. After a court battle over the initiative this past summer, voters looked past the industry's economic arguments and put the animals ahead of profits. This is one of those situations where mainstream animal welfare concerns agree with the animal rights position, and banning an entire use of animals is a great victory.
