Huffington Post Posts Vegan “Projects”

Because there are only 5 comments, it might be nice to go on over to Huffington Post's "Vegan Holiday Baking Projects" article and have a say. Why the heck they're called "projects," I'll never figure out. If they were nonvegan, would they be called "projects?" They're all desserts, so why not call them that? In fact, I think I'm going to go over there right now and mention that.

Here's my comment: As a vegan who bakes weekly, I must say that it's not half the big deal it's made out to be. It's easy, it's not expensive, and the food is delicious and far healthier (with zero cholesterol) than the nonvegan varieties. Calling the desserts "projects" merely sets up the reader to have an expectation that what's ahead shall be "work" and maybe even difficult or treacherous (and in need of being tackled), and who knows how it will all end!

It's just dessert. And it involves ingredients. Some are different than the ones you're used to using. They can all be found in my local grocery; I rarely go to Whole Foods or a health food store. It's a "project" as much as baking any other dessert is a "project."

  1. You know… I confess, I don't do that much cooking (or baking) but I do know there's less "difficulty" preparing food in a Vegan kitchen. There is less fuss, and trouble. Not worrying about the issues of "cross contaminants", or animal-food related illness simplifies things… In a Vegan kitchen – one cutting board can do nicely! 🙂 In truth, eliminating animal products makes many culinary endeavors much less of a "project" than articles like this want to admit.

  2. Ha! Bea beat me to it. As an avid vegan cook and baker, I will admit to a quirky habit of mine. Sometimes when I have the opportunity to cook or bake in a spacious, modern kitchen (i.e., not my own small NYC one!) I pretend I have my own cruelty-free cooking show, complete with studio audience. My closing line to my "audience" after a baking stint is, "And the best part of vegan baking? You can lick the spoon with a clear conscience! No salmonella here!" (proceeded by said licking of spoon with a bit of a dramatic air.)

As a non-vegan (but curious) I was extremely disappointed not to find the actual vegan recipes referenced. 🙁

  4. Morganna,
Wasn't that weird? Readers didn't even get a chance to see how much of a "project" it ISN'T. Fortunately, people like Elaine did post links and also books (here are some recipes: http://www.vegansoapbox.com/sections/vegan-food/)
