Feeding the Hungry Without Killing the Animals

On December 20, I wrote about why Heifer International isn’t an animal-friendly organization and why it doesn’t deserve your hard-earned money. But if world hunger is an issue that you’re passionate about, yet you’re an Animal Person, Laura Lee at myspace suggests Food For Life Global, which has been distributing pure vegetarian meals since 1974. Please note that when Laura Lee read on the website that some projects have milk or milk products in them, she wrote to the organization and received the following response:

FFL Global is the umbrella organization for FFL projects around the world. Most of our projects are vegan. There are some that do use milk from cows that they protect themselves. And there are others in India that use yogurt made from commercial milk. In most cases, commercial dairy cows in India are not killed. However, this is certainly not 100%. FFL Global advocates the use of only protected cow milk or nothing at all. We however cannot control all aspects of our affiliates operations since we are not funding them. Those affiliates that we do support financially must be vegan. So your donation will only be used to support vegan projects, or those projects where the cows are owned and protected by our people.

Please visit the Food For Life Global site, add it to your list of approved charities to support, and spread the word about a truly compassionate way to fight hunger.

Wow Thanks for writing about Food For Global!

You know the milk thing is still bothering me. For a cow to produce milk she must bear a calf. So I understand that they use the female calves for milk but what about the male calves that are born? The life expectancy of a cow is anywhere from 15 to 25 years. Are we to believe that they are just going to feed and keep these cows around that don't serve them any purpose for that long of time till they die of old age? I really do love that they support vegan projects. I feel its a great victory but I just can't seem the let the milk issue go.
